On a sunny Tuesday afternoon the boy and I wined and dined ourselves at the newly reopened and reinvented ‘De Beren’ in the theatre district of Rotterdam. Having already heard a number of things about the 33 year old Rotterdam born restaurant chain, I went in with an open mind and a nostalgic partner in crime.
The completely refurbished interior has an Applebee’s vibe (a popular American bar and grill) and an open kitchen and friendly staff that greet you as you enter. The classic wooden features and odd cuddly bear remain but are now housed within a fancier and rejuvenated restaurant environment.
Ribs, schnitzels and satay
Known for their oversized portion sizes of ribs, schnitzels and satay, ‘De Beren’ have retained their extensive menu and still honor their longtime fans with the inclusion of their famous satay with secret recipe peanut sauce and Bear burger but have streamlined their offerings and now include some favourite local Rotterdam beers and cheese. De Beren is the perfect venue for an after-work refreshment (with the Rotterdam city location boasting a 200 seated sun-facing terrace), post cinema catchup or evening meal with family and friends.
Burger filled bang.
With over 30 restaurants in the Netherlands, this Rotterdam born institution is back with a burger filled bang, bringing a fresh menu, even friendlier staff and a sleek and shiny new interior that will shake up any pre-conceived ideas that you may have had about ‘De Beren’ and their family of bears.
